The Chapel is a beautiful fixture inside of the Gardens & Grounds at Chateau du Pin. The Chapel’s gorgeous stained glass windows, clock, and architecture make up part of the Chateau’s Monument Historique classification and are part of the Michelin Star gardens. The Chapel was dedicated in 1711 to the Virgin Mary and is built in the Plantagenêt style which makes it unusual for a chateau of the size and style of Chateau du Pin. It is little changed from that time.
The fleurs de lys floor tiles date from the 16th century, along with a clock mechanism that used to strike on the hour and half hour.
The stained glass windows celebrate the life of the Virgin Mary and are from the 18th century.
The building sits to the side of the “grand allee”, a path lined with topiary that punctuates the historic gardens. The bell tower and clock, which are unusual features of chapels associated with chateaux, serve as a focal point of the garden design, providing a counterpoint to the sweeping views of the garden and distant views to the west.
The chapel is closed only because of the current structural problems. It would normally be open to garden visitors and has been the site of occasional religious services., small concerts and poetry readings. However, the cost to repair the structural problems that are posing great risk to the integrity of the chapel are beyond the means of the chateau’s operating budget.
In addition to being part of the visual landscape of Chateau du Pin, the Chapel serves as a way to remember family members who have passed, their names memorialized in engraved marble stone along the inside walls of the Chapel. Restoring this key building is a project that we are deeply passionate about.
